The Contests in 2000 - 2005

Drive home the point – swiftly!

In order to provide food for thought, to stimulate political debate on development issues, to get at the heart of political articulation, and to merge the work of journalists, which is bound to the topicality of social processes, with artistic expression, the editors of ”Zeitschrift Entwicklungspolitik” and ”Dritte Welt Journalisten Netz” (Third World Journalists’ Network), together with other partners, started to give prizes for good quality photographs and cartoons on development. The award ceremony for the contest in 2000 was held in Berlin (Germany).

In 2000, the winners in the category cartoons were:
1st prize: Alfred J. Smolinski (Küssnacht am Rigi, Switzerland)
2nd prize: Hans Sigg (Curio, Switzerland)
3rd prize: Jürgen Tomicak (Werl-Westönnen, Germany)


The jury for cartoons in 2000 consisted of Prof. Jörg Becker (media scolar, Solingen), Fritz Berger (photographer, Berne), Uschi Eid (German Parliamentary State Secretary, Berlin), Professor Dietrich Grünewald (arts scolar, Koblenz), Peter Pfister (cartoonist, Berlin), K. Friedrich Schade (executive editor, Frankfurt/M), and Prof. Klaus Staeck (graphic designer, Heidelberg).


The second contest in 2003 was organised in coordination with the promoter of the media award on development politics, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The awards were presented in Frankfurt/Main (Germany).

In 2003, the winners in the category cartoons were:
1st prize: Maria Sauheitl (Germany)
2nd prize: Andreas Buser (Switzerland) and Walter Hollenstein (Switzerland)


The international expert jury consisted of Peter Bettelheim, linguist (Austria); Martina Gelsinger, arts scholar (Austria); Marie-Anna Gneist, photographer (Switzerland); Prof. Dietrich Grünewald, arts scholar (Germany); Prof. Dieter Kramer, cultural scientist (Germany); Urs. A, Jaeggi, Head of Dept. of Information and Education, Bread For All (Switzerland), Martin Liebig, graphic designer (Germany); Lydia Matzka, photographer (Austria); Anja Ruf, journalist (Germany); K. Friedrich Schade, executive editor (Germany); Sabine Spieckermann, graphic designer, (Germany); Christian Wilmsen, Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ, Germany).


Following up on the contests of 2000 and 2003, we organised another cartoon contest in 2005. In 2005, the first review of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was on the international agenda, which motivated us to focus our global cartoon contest on the MDGs. The 48 best cartoons of the contest 2005 were used for an exhibition which has since March 2006 been shown in schools and further educational establishments (www.armut-muss-geschichte-werden.de), in cooperation with the organisation “Dialog International” (www.dialog-international.org).

1st prize: Suresh Sawant (India)
2nd prize: Jim Morin (USA)
3rd prize: Finn Graff (Norway)


The expert jury of the global catoon contest in 2005 included: Rainer Hachfeld, cartoonist (Berlin); Al Imfeld, writer (Switzerland); Prof. Dieter Kramer, curator (Germany); K. Friedrich Schade, former executive editor of the magazine ”Entwicklungspolitik” (Germany); Heide Simonis, former prime minister of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany)
